What the heck is a Whoopie Pie?
Whoopie Pie (n) – a confection of two small and flat cakes with cream frosting in the middle; also called ‘Whoopee Pie’ or ‘Black and Whites.’
Think big soft OREO. According to food historians, Amish women would bake these (known as hucklebucks at the time) and put them in farmers’ lunchboxes. When farmers would find these treats in their lunch, they would shout “Whoopie!
Recently we’ve been experimenting with Whoopie Pies and the lesser known sub-species: Sweetie Pies (smaller and dipped in Chocolate). These tasty little cakes are experiencing the fashionable upsurge that recently accompanied Cupcakes. Moving them from the lunch-pail to the boutique bakery. Apparently we’re not the only ones playing with Whoopies. B.Hall, Baker a Whoopie Pie bakery in Washington D.C. is credited with launching the recent Whoopie craze. The Baltimore Sun had a recent article about Whoopie Pies and their blast into foodie favorite shops like Williams Sonoma and Whole Foods. Even our old friends at the Food Network are calling Whoopies a nationwide hit! Who are we to argue?
The traditional Whoopie is Chocolate with Vanilla filling. Never to be the ones who rest on tradition; we’ve been playing with a variety of flavors and fillings. Come by Sweet Carolina Cupcakes and try a Whoopie Pie or Sweetie Pie and see what we’re talking about.
